I’ll focus on the macro design trends that I think we’ll see in 2017. Some are continuations of existing narratives while others are relatively nascent.
Proliferation of New Design Tools – Designer Fund has invested or partnered with a number of new design tools coming onto the market including Wake, Framer, Abstract, and Figma. This is happening because more designers have the skills to build their own tools and the connections and desire to start companies around those products. Additionally, new mediums like Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality will require us to build new tools to effectively design products and services for them. Expect more exciting developments in this space in 2017.
Social Impact – As a reaction to the 2016 election, more designers will consider the social impact of the products and services they build. You’ll see more projects focused on fixing politics, healthcare, civic planning, and many other spaces that have been underserved by design. Also expect movements like Time Well Spent to become more mainstream as designers grapple with the effects of their creations on society.
